Are you or someone you love sick? For as long as I can remember, I’ve had health issues. I was diagnosed with asthma at age 5, so I know what it is like to struggle to breathe. Having lived with infertility, endometriosis, and DES-exposure, I’ve experienced the heartbreak of childlessness. Having suffered from fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I know unrelenting pain and fatigue. So, I don’t take good health for granted. I know what you’re going through.
For years, I tried both conventional, Western medicine and non-traditional, alternative health modalities. Neither gave me the relief I sought. Then, I thought, “What if I learn how to live in harmony with God’s ways rather than against them regarding my health?” From that, “Be in Health: Bible-Based Health Restoration” was born. A brief description follows.
Bible-Based Health Restoration
God originally provided Adam and Eve with everything they needed for a healthy life in companionship with Him. He provided the best food for them.
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. (Genesis 1:29 NIV)
This description includes nuts, grains, legumes, and seeds.
The Health Benefits of Plants
In addition to the right foods (nuts, grains, legumes, and seeds), God also provided for health and wholeness through the essential oils of plants. People have used essential oils for thousands of years for medicinal, cosmetic, religious, and embalming purposes. They are also used to positively affect the emotions and to elevate spirituality. Today, many people use them in place of toxic household cleaners and beauty products.
Essential oils are the lifeblood of plants. What happens when you peel an orange? Lots of tiny drops of oil come bursting out! Those are essential oils.
Essential oils support body systems. They are not meant to replace medical advice. And they are certainly not to be elevated as idols. They are not our source of health restoration (Christ is), they are an avenue to receive/maintain wellness from God.
Vegetables and Meat
After the fall, God told Adam that he could eat plants (Genesis 3:17-19). Vegetables take longer to digest than the fruits, grains, and seeds that God originally gave humans to eat, meaning man could go longer between eating.
In Genesis 9:1-4, after the flood, God instructed Noah about eating meat.
Dietary Laws of the Old Testament
God provided descriptions of clean and unclean foods (meaning which foods you should eat and which you shouldn’t) in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.
Some examples of clean (kosher) meat are:
- Other game
- Fish with fins and scales
- Flying grasshoppers
Unclean meat examples are:
- Animals that eat other animals
- Birds of prey (eagle, vulture, kite, raven, ostrich, seagull, owl, stork, heron)
- Coney (dassie) (a type of rodent)
- Hare (rabbit)
- All insects besides locusts, crickets, and flying grasshoppers
- Pigs (pork and bacon)
- Marine life without fins and scales (such as shellfish – crab, shrimp, lobster, oysters, mussels)
- “Whatsoever goes upon his paws,” such as cats, dogs, rats, mice, moles, bats, ferrets, weasels , etc.
- All reptiles and amphibians
Why are some animals clean and others unclean? Simply put, God tells us not to eat unclean foods because they aren’t healthy for human consumption. Many of these animals carry toxins that are stored in their flesh. Rabbits digest their own excrement. Pigs have high levels of bacteria, such as campylobacta and salmonella. Shellfish are scavengers, eating refuse.
For those who make the point that we are no longer bound to dietary laws, I refer you to Romans 10:4, as well as:
So, the four classifications of food (trees that yield seed, plants that yield seed, field plants, clean meat), along with essential oils and supplements, are the foundation of a Bible-based health restoration program.
All Disease Begins in the Gut
Hippocrates, the “Father of Western Medicine,” spoke these words over 2,000 years ago. Certainly, some diseases, like genetic diseases, don’t start in the gut, but for just about everything else, the gut is where it all begins.
The reason for this is the different healthy gut bacteria residing in our digestive tracts, as well as the integrity of the gut lining. According to numerous studies, the lining of the small intestine can become porous and unwanted bacterial products called endotoxins can sometimes “leak” through the lining and enter the bloodstream. This is called intestinal permeability or leaky gut. For many years, the traditional medical community did not recognize this disease, but now it is known to them as Hyperpermeable Intestines. When this happens, our immune system thinks these molecules are foreign invaders and mounts an attack against them, resulting in a chronic inflammatory response.
8 Signs You May Have Leaky Gut
- Food sensitives or allergies (especially gluten and dairy)
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBS, Crohn’s, bloating, gas, chronic diarrhea, or constipation)
- Autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, MS)
- Thyroid problems (Hashimoto’s Disease, Graves Disease, hypothyroid, hyperthyroid)
- Adrenal fatigue, candida, or a slow metabolism
- Malabsorption (of vitamin B12 and magnesium, among others)
- Inflammatory skin conditions (acne, psoriasis, eczema)
- Mood issues (anxiety, depression) and autism
